State: competition proposal
Concept: 24 hour use
The site is located in a dense, busy area of Athens, Psyri. The project refers to the renovation and reconfiguration of an existing block of flats. The program , which derived after a close survey of the areas needs, refers to a mixed use program including, garage, shops, public spaces ,offices, and two private flats with roof garden that create a compact urban block in one building . The aim was to create a mock up of a “perfect” neighbourhood with all its functional and typological programs, both profitable and pleasant to the owner/developer and its users. Through the reconfiguration process the aim was to readjust and enhance the elements that the existing apartment block lacks; natural light, green space and circulation. By reshaping the existing staircase for public uses and introducing a new one for private use of the flats and the roof terrace the block allowed a 24 hour vertical circulation and function. The block was transformed into a 24 hour mixed use “neighborhood” .The existing shaft was reshaped to a natural light collector and a green vertical garden allowing visual interconnection of the floors.
